Friends, in the previous section, we suggested refraining from using soap on the body while bathing and avoiding perfumes, deodorants, powders, or attars during this Navratri. The intention behind this was to help you step away from being mere pawns in the world of advertisements and reconnect with your authentic self. Navratri offers an opportunity for such experimentation, as it is a time of self-purification and renewal. Even if your family or companions notice changes in you, these changes will be subtle and natural.

In the previous section, we also discussed how, according to both science and spirituality, our body comprises atoms (matter) and energy, referred to in spiritual terms as Shiva and Shakti. When this energy resides within you, why seek it outside?

This Navratri, begin the practice of meditation. You don’t need a guru for this; a guide can show you the way, but the journey is yours alone. Everyone’s meditation experience is unique, so don’t let others’ words distract or discourage you.


Starting Meditation: A Fresh Perspective

Meditation is often surrounded by myths and overcomplications. Set aside all preconceived notions and begin afresh, starting from zero. Remember these key points:

  1. Meditation Requires No Special Setup:
    You don’t need a specific place, direction, time, mantra, or environment for meditation.

    Why?
    Consider this analogy: If you condition yourself to sleep only in a specific direction, in complete darkness, or on a luxurious bed, over time, you might struggle to sleep without those conditions. However, if you are extremely tired or sleep-deprived, you fall asleep instantly, regardless of the circumstances. This illustrates how habits shape us. Don’t make the same mistake with meditation—let it be a practice, not a dependency on specific conditions.

  2. Change Your Routine Regularly:
    Every few days, alter the direction, location, time, or environment of your meditation practice. This ensures that meditation becomes a habit of the mind and soul, not one tied to external circumstances.

Breaking Myths About Rituals and Superstitions

Many believe in omens or disruptions during rituals—such as a flame going out, eating something different, thinking a negative thought, or wearing certain colors—causing misfortune or angering the goddess.

Friends, the Divine Mother has no time for such trivialities. Even science acknowledges the possibility of countless Earth-like planets with populations as vast as ours. Wouldn’t it seem absurd to think the Mother is upset over such small matters?


Connecting with Shakti: A Simple Analogy

Your goal during Navratri is to connect with Shakti, to invite positivity into your being and surroundings. Shakti (energy) has no inherent interest in you but becomes accessible when you establish a connection. Once that connection is made, the energy flows naturally into your life, empowering and accompanying you.

Think of it this way: when you need electricity, you apply for a connection at your home. The power company has many customers; it doesn’t need you, but you need it. Similarly, it is you who must seek Shakti—not the other way around.
