Vigyan Bhairava Tantra
Sutra – 82
On this Earth, every substance has weight, including us. Even the rays of the sun possess weight. Have you ever tried to understand why this is so?
Science explains that weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. While mass remains constant, the weight of an object changes depending on the gravitational pull it experiences. Furthermore, there exists a gravitational attraction between any two masses, and the greater the mass, the stronger the pull between them.
In spirituality and Tantra, the attraction or attachment toward the body and material objects is known as maya—the illusion of the material world. If one can detach from these attachments, one can progress rapidly in the spiritual realm and ultimately realize the Divine. This is precisely what happens in the state of samadhi.
It is the identification with the body that binds us to relationships, attachments, and desires—the threads of maya that keep us ensnared. Spirituality seeks to convey that the body is a material entity, and therefore, it has weight. As long as you remain attached to the body, it becomes a barrier to deeper meditation and spiritual advancement.
You may have observed this yourself—when you attempt to meditate, your body often becomes an obstacle. It creates discomfort, restlessness, or distractions that prevent your focus. And if not the body, then the mind interferes, pulling your thoughts in different directions. After all, the mind is also a part of the body.
Spiritual wisdom teaches that you must perceive your body and mind as separate from your true self, as entities to be observed rather than identified with. Have you ever tried to understand the true meaning of this?
Within our body resides a source of energy, a life force that sustains us. As long as this force remains within, we are alive, and the body functions. When it departs, the body ceases to exist—it is what we call death. Yes, you are correct in surmising that we are speaking of the soul.
The soul is a fragment of the Divine, an eternal and infinite presence within us. Like the Divine, it is all-powerful and limitless. However, we often confine this boundless energy to merely sustaining the physical body. The soul is not a material entity, and hence, it has no weight.
This sutra seeks to explain and illuminate this profound truth while offering a method through which you can effortlessly attain the meditative state. By following this method, you can transcend the limitations of body and mind, experiencing the infinite weightlessness of your true self.
